Barn Hill Preserve of Delaware began holding Kangaroo Yoga in January 2020 at local gyms to raise money for Australia's devastating bushfires in late 2019 and early 2020. Those early Kangaroo Yoga sessions were hugely popular and helped us acquire funds that we were then able to distribute to the Australian wildlife warriors in need!
Flash forward to summer of 2020... just like most businesses, COVID-19 had heavily impacted our ability to travel around and educate persons across the country about our amazing animal ambassadors. Our team of dedicated animal education enthusiasts at Barn Hill Preserve had to get creative in order to spread our knowledge and passion for animals to the public in these uncertain times. We began showcasing our animals in Facebook live videos, livestream presentations to schools, ZOO-m calls for people of all ages, and our drive-thru events called Car-E-Safaris. Despite the successes of those options, we still strived to bring people a more interactive experience with our animal ambassadors and that is where our new outdoor Kangaroo Yoga comes in!
Will there be real live kangaroos?
YES!! We have FIVE kangaroo ambassador animals, Arnie, Chandler, Mac, Ruphus, and Tyson. Each are males between the age of one and two years old. During yoga you will be able to feed and pet the roos if they approach you but DO NOT try to chase them or pick them up. Please be respectful of the roos and they will respect you in return.
Do I need to be an experienced yogi?
NO! Our classes are well suited for beginners of all ages, and if you want to just sit on a yoga mat near kangaroos, that is fine too!
Is this event rain-or-shine?
Most of the time, YES! If it is a light drizzle or a short period of rain, we continue yoga as planned. The only extra thing that we would recommend that you bring is a towel. If the rain looks like it will be a more powerful storm, we will make the call 20 minutes before the class. In the event that we do cancel class, we will reach out to reschedule your reservation to another time or $35 of Barn Hill Preserve credit.
Where are you located?
We are in Frankford, DE! Our address is 34215 Peppers Corner Rd. Below is a simplified map of where to find us!
If you are traveling SOUTH: on your left, you will see a large green fenced in area at the corner of Peppers Corner Rd and Beaver Dam Rd, enter here!
If you are traveling NORTH: you will see a house with a red roof on your right, pass that house, you will turn into the green fenced in area on your right!
Are yoga mats provided?
We recommend that you bring your own mat, plus a towel. If you do not have a yoga mat, we do offer rentals for $5/each!
What about social distancing?
We require that you wear a mask to check-in and until you reach the place you set up your mat. Our large outdoor area has ample space to remain 6 ft apart from other guests that are not in your party.
Are children allowed to attend?
It is not reccomended to bring children under the age of five, and all persons under 18 are required to be accompanied by an adult.
Can I book a private session for me and my friends?
I've heard you do sloth encounters. What do they entail and how do I add an encounter on to my yoga session?
Our sloth encounters are able to be signed up for on the day of your yoga session. They are $30 per person and during the encounter, you are able to hold our youngest sloth, Forrest, as he rests on a pillow, as our two older sloths, Charlie and Noah hang up on their perches behind you. After your time with Forrest, we will allow you to feed a snack to Charlie or Noah. During the encounter, our staff will take your picture and then print a 4x6 glossy photo so you can remember this experience forever!
